Submissions isn't the best term for this page.

All of the stories in Charnel House started out with a script, and the idea that through collaboration we'd get the best finished product possible. Through specialization each contributor crafted the components to make cohesive, compelling crime, suspense and horror short stories. Scripts are selected by their mood and "voices" as well as plot and hook. The pencils and inks are tailored to compliment those elements. Colorists are chosen based on their style in relation to the content of the individual story. The lettering is professional-quality and further refines the overall look. The stories are assembled and and molded taking advantage of the individual contributors' strengths.

When the story is finished it is put into Charnel House. Pages are created which lead in and out of the story via the narrator character, MORT. The story as a finished piece, is also aggressively submitted to third party anthologies and collections as both color and black and white. A great example of this, from issue #1 is Landslide. Gama Flores and I developed the story and finished the pencil and inks. We looked for a writer who could imbue this straight forward story with a life that we could not. Kevin Huff's script was chosen from many great submissions. Soon thereafter, Viper comics named it their 2008 talent search winner, and in March, it was printed in A Dummy's Guide to Danger: Lost at Sea #1.

I'm confident that the stories in issue #2 will yield even more spots in larger venues as well as in Charnel House.

I've tried to start up an area on the community page where you can communicate easily with me and other contributors and prospective contributors. It's "The Dating Game" thread.

I would be more than happy to open a dialogue about how other talented people can get involved with this book, and am always available by email at wes@weshuffor.com

Writers

I am always interested in talking to writers. You're skills are the foundation of this medium. Currently, for issue #2, I am seeking:

  • Finished Crime, Suspense and Horror short story scripts. Average page count between 8 and 15 pages. (there's a little wiggle-room there.)

Stories should be fairly complete with a beginning middle and end. I like a classic Twilight Zone hooks, but I'm not a writer so, y'know what's good.

Now, I'm cool with reading premises or drafts. but, like, I can't decide whether it will work or not based on a synopsis. Most writers have a weblog or something with finished work to send links to, but I need to see polished scripts for serious consideration. (there is a point after the art is done to refine the script, a little, to keep it all cohesive.) contact

Artists

Pencillers - Standard 4 or 5 page sample of sequentials will be enough. Sending a link to the pages is preferable. If you send the files, please just send low-res, 600 - 700 pixels wide is fine. The timeline for publication is pretty loose, thanks to the format. Collaboration will be contingent on a lot of factors so please provide your page rates, and how long it would take to do 8 - 15 pages. If you ink your own stuff that's cool, I do too. contact

Inkers - Standard submission would consist of inks and source files, please provide sequentials, page rates and timeframe to ink 8 - 15 pages. same as above with the links or low res files. I ink my own stuff, but people specialize for a reason, so if you can make my stuff look better, the book will benefit. Also pairing with a penciler may be an option. contact

Letterers - Lettering is pretty much covered, but feel free to send samples. Networking is fine and it doesn't hurt to know people. contact

Finished pieces

Stories - As far as anthologies go this genre is by far the most common. That's great! That means there is plenty of already finished pieces out there ready to be printed. If you have a color or black and white story that you own the rights to, and think it would be a nice fit in Charnel House, send a link or low res files and we'll go from there. This would be a best case scenario for us, and definetly move the book along faster. If your planning on putting a whole story together for this submission, you may want to run it by us at various stages of production. I'd hate for someone to go to that much work and not be able to accept it for whatever reason. contact

Covers/Pinups - I will definetly be looking for pin-ups in issue #2. If you have a color, or black and white piece that would make a great pin-up or even a cover send a link or low res files and we'll go from there. contact

If you do something else production related that I may have overlooked don't hesitate to send an email. Thanks. contact
